Upper West Side Streets Renaissance

The Upper West Side Streets Renaissance Campaign is a community-led effort to advocate for and win great walking spaces, safer streets, less traffic, a world-class bike network, and cleaner air in the neighborhood we call home.

We are residents, businesses, and advocates working together to bring the change we deserve to the neighborhood we love.

Reminder: Riverside Park Dismount Zone Discussion Monday Night

Hello UWS members,

This is just a quick reminder about tomorrow night's CB7 Parks & Environment Committee meeting at 7:00 p.m. Riverside Park's John Herrold will be there to discuss their recent "Cyclists Must Dismount" policy at 72nd Street. Please join us to let Riverside Park know that responsible cyclists can share paths with pedestrians!

Also, we are planning a celebratory ride down Columbus with a party to follow. Please stay tuned for more information on this and more (the party will likely happen in the next two weeks).

Riverside Park access and MORE!

COLUMBUS AVENUE RE-DESIGN:
As the weather turns cooler, we hope you are still out enjoying some FUN outdoor activities on the UWS. For those of you paying attention to the new street re-design on Columbus, the first section was completed many weeks ago (from 96th to 86th) and the second section (from 86th to 77th) is being striped as I type. That means, in a week or two, we can ride from 96th to 77th on a fully parking protected bike lane. AND, we will be getting 28 concrete pedestrian islands with trees. We hope these islands will vastly increase safety for pedestrians and bring some green to our streets. If you haven't been out there yet, please check it out and notice how much calmer the Avenue feels. We would LOVE you to sign our petition thanking both the community board, Mayor Bloomberg, and the DOT for their commitment to making our streets safer. Here is the petition site: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/columbusavenue/. Also, our elected and appointed officials need to start hearing from you. Please consider sending a thank you letter (or call) to Gale Brewer and Deputy Mayor Goldsmith. We want them to know that there are many people LOVING this re-design, despite those who are having a hard time adjusting to something new. You will find their addresses at the end of this email, and I've attached a sample letter from one of our UWSSR members. In the coming weeks, we'll be planning a celebration for the new re-design, so please stay tuned for details.

Protected Bike Lanes are Coming: Part 2

In a win for Upper West Side pedestrians, cyclists, and businesses alike, Community Board 7 approved the DOT's proposal to install a physically protected bike path on 20 blocks of Columbus Avenue. UWSSR members and supporters were out in full force at the June CB7 meeting, offering live testimony representing perspectives from dozens of angles, a supporting letter signed by 45 businesses on the affected corridor, and a whopping 457 handwritten letters in support.

Protected Bike Lanes are Coming...

On May 11, the DOT unveiled its street redesign proposal including protected bike lanes for a portion of Columbus Avenue, from 96th to 77th street. This will be the first section of what we hope will be several improvements to Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues to improve the city's bike network and enhance street safety for all. After the presentation, the board's Transportation Committee listened to comments from several of the 80 plus proponents of the proposal (and three against), then surprisingly voted 5-5 on a resolution to approve the proposal.

Protected Bike Lanes are Coming to the Upper West Side!

The DOT has responded to numerous requests, including by UWSSR members and partners, and plans to start installing physically protected bike lanes on the Upper West Side this year. Next week, on May 11, the DOT will present the street redesign proposal for a portion of Columbus Avenue, the first section of what we hope will be several improvements to Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues to improve the city's bike network and enhance street safety for all.

UWS Jewish Community is Joining the Campaign for Livable Streets

Im involved in an effort at Congregation Bnai Jeshurun, one of the largest and most influential synagogues on the Upper West Side , to develop a plan for greening our street, the 200 block of West 88th Street , between Broadway and West End Avenue . The Environmental Action Hevra, one of several committees in the synagogues social justice/social action program, has adopted this as its primary objective for this year.

Curitiba rocks the house

At the last meeting of the Green Committee of Community Board 7 of the Upper West Side we watched a documentary about the transformation of Curitiba, Brazil. It's called "A Convenient Truth" and I highly recommend it, though you must not watch the trailer on Youtube which makes it seem like little but talking heads with cheesy music in the background.

ASK FOR THE CHANGES YOU WANT

My friend, Julie Margolies, came to me one day and said, "the intersection near my kids' school is really dangerous. What can we do about it?" We met on the corner of 95th and Amsterdam and witnessed what it was like to cross this awful intersection. It was especially daunting to cross with a stroller or a young (read: short and hard to see) child in tow. Julie took the initiative to write a letter to Gale Brewer and ask for a Leading Pedestrian Interval and signage to alert drivers of a delayed green. Julie is willing to organize her school and get a petition started.

West 106th Street Bike Lane improvement needed!

I want to begin by thanking profusely the city for repainting West 106th Street with such an excellent bike lane. I ride over it several times a day, and feel much safer. But -- there's always a but -- the section of 106th Street in front of the Jewish Home and Hospital is exceedingly dangerous. In more than 90% of my trips east bound on this street, there are vans and cars parked in the bike lane. Almost every time. This requires me to ride in the car lane, which then forces cars to drive in the median, which they are happy to do at full speed.

UWSers Ring in the New Year

Dear Upper West Siders:

uws2.jpgI want to thank you again for coming out last Thursday for the launch of the Blueprint for the Upper West Side.  Its been almost exactly a year since the birth of the Upper West Side Streets Renaissance (UWSSR) and our celebration at PS 87 was a terrific way to begin year two.  If you havent already, take a look at the Submitted by Nathan John on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 10:27.

Shout it from the curb-tops!

We've added a new page of letter templates to the site to make it even easier to make yourself heard on the UWS issues that matter to you.

They're separated by individual letters, that you send yourself, and group letters, which you can use to gather support from other people in the neighborhood.

So take them, use them, re-write them, customize them.  The important thing is to make sure the people that represent our neighborhood are hearing about these issues.

Want more and better bike lanes and complete streets in Manhattan?

If youre reading this, chances are the answer is  yes! So heres the deal: apply to join your local community board (CB).

This year I had the opportunity to witness my local CB first hand, and testified alongside others in support of the cross-town bike lane on 106th Street.  We won, and while its far from perfect, its a start.

I love my neighborhood, but where do I sit?

Have you noticed more parents with young children, more senior citizens, and more people who work at home on the Upper West Side than ever before?  Wouldnt it be nice if there were more outdoor seating so that when we arent on the run we can sit outside and enjoy a coffee, a book, or a friend?  Benches, like the stoops people used to sit on, draw us to the streets; eyes on the streets make communities safer and more cohesive.

Through Other Eyes

Sometimes we get so used to our surroundings that we dont even notice small changes.  Whenever a friend sees my baby, I inevitably hear about how big she has gotten.  I dont even notice.  I see her everyday, and these small changes just dont register with me.

Re-Imagine Your Own Curb

As New York City braces for the impact of the ongoing financial turmoil on Wall Street, governments, non-profits, commuters and neighborhoods will face a stark choice in the months and years to come. The choice will be whether we will let the lack of financial resources dramatically reduce of quality of life, or if we can find ways to actually improve quality of life with less resources.

Soldiers, Sailors, and Cyclists! Oh, my!

summer-streets-uws-003.jpg This past Saturday, a handful of happy UWS cyclists met up at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at 10am. Their destination? Summer Streets, of course!

It was a beautiful day to be outside, an opinion shared by the thousands of New Yorkers that the UWS riders encountered when they arrived at Summer Streets. Though the crew quickly dispersed into the jubilant crowd, a great time and a great ride were had by all.

Its Officially Unanimous

Even the Wall Street Journal is on board with the DOT's new Summer Streets program. Check out what they had to say about the value of car-free streets:

"On three August Saturdays this summer, New Yorkers will be able to ride their bikes all the way from the BrooklynBridge to Central Park a 6.9-mile route - without a single cabbie honking at them or absent-minded driver smashing them into a parked car.

106th St Update

First and foremost, thanks again to the over 40 people who showed up at Community Board 7 to express their support for the DOT's proposal to install buffered bike lanes on W. 106th St., which will provide a crucial crosstown park-to-park linkage.  In the wake of that first meeting local stakeholders, including the Jewish Home and Hospital and Greenmarkets, have been taking part in ongoing discussions about how to best implement the bike lane plan without disrupting residents daily lives.

Good Times Had By All on the Upper West Ride

On Saturday, November the 10th, an enthusiastic group of cyclists met up at 72nd and Central Park West for a fortifying dose of bagels and history before setting out on a relaxing bike tour of the Upper West Side.

As the riders pedaled sedately through the neighborhood's scenic landscape, they passed many historic and contemporary points of interest; the ride paused at three of them for brief but edifying talks by Upper West Side advocates. Many questions were asked and answered, friends were made, and fingers were chilled nearly (but not quite) to the bone.
